• Was presented a check for $2,800.00 by the fans of Syracuse in 1949 after a "night" in his honor:

this "night" for this popular flyhawk was to help meet expenses for one of his twin daughters who need a expensive, serious heart operation that had only been performed less than 10 times before in the nation's history.

Pre-professional career

• Led the San Diego Post Number 6 team to the National American Legion title in 1942 beating Berwyn, Illinois for the crown.

Outside of baseball

• Served in the Armed Forces in 1944 and 1945.

Contract signing

• Was outstanding amateur player in the country in 1942 when Cincinnati signed him to his first pro contract.
